Clinton vs. Obama: Immigration, healthcare, foreign relations February 3, 2008

Especially looking at these other issues, Clinton and Obama seem to be saying the same things, and it probably just comes down to who you think will be able to follow through and get people thinking with them. It’s a very tough call.
IMMIGRATION
Clinton and Obama say virtually the same thing about immigration, basically, securing borders, fixing the current bureaucratic mess so legal immigrants can get in, cracking down on employers of illegals, setting up an easy system for employers to check to see if someone can work legally, and making preserving families a priority.
Obama does go a bit further in saying he proposes a way for undocumented workers to pay a fine, learn English and get in line behind legal immigrants to become citizens
HEALTHCARE
Both are very similar here as well including,
* Healthcare for anyone who wants it, under the system that gives members of Congress their health insurance
* Making it illegal to deny coverage or charge outrageous premiums because of pre-existing conditions or likely to occur conditions.
* Portable coverage not tied to your job.
* Provide tax credits to small businesses that want to start offering health insurance to employees
* Hillary – tax credits to people so that ins. does not exceed a certain percentage of household income
* Barack – employers who don’t provide insurance have to pay a percentage of payroll into the national plan.
* Barack – mandatory coverage of children under parents’ plan until age 25.
* Barack – lower prescription drug cost, let fed gov’t negotiate with pharmaceutical cos.
FOREIGN RELATIONS
Both are for bringing troops home, talking to our enemies (like Iran) and do not differ much. Clinton might have a slight edge here in that she has met with more world leaders as First Lady than Obama has.
